On March 17, 2017, fans and viewers flooded to the movie theaters to see the anticipated new movie Beauty and the Beast. The new live-action film was released worldwide, and after months of hard work and determination, the cast and crew certainly deserved the applause.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast reached $170 million in ticket sales alone in just the first few days on the big screen. The movie surpassed big money movies (such as Batman vs Superman), along with other Marvel movies. The nostalgia from the animated movie gave adults a reason to go see it, not to mention the generational appeal of Emma Watson, popularly known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films. Mrs. Bastedo, a teacher at Orchard Park High School, explained how her daughter has been wanting her [Bastedo] to take her to see it.

Many people are praising the movie because of the added depth. Screenwriters Stephen Chosky and Evan Spiliotopoulos took the beloved story and modernized it. They enhanced the film by changing certain characters’ attributes and added plot lines. Sophomore William Barsottelli said, “they took all the plot holes from the animated film and solved them in the live action.” For example, in the animated film, Belle’s mother is disregarded. In the live action, there is an entire scene dedicated to explaining what happened to her.

The new movie also explored an in-depth look at Belle. In the animated movie, Belle was a feisty young woman who spoke her mind, and while the new movie maintained these characteristics, they went above and beyond. Much of the appreciation for the movie deals with Watson’s portrayal of Belle. In an interview, Watson explained her goals for herself, saying, “I wanted to make sure that I was championing that same spirit, those same values, and the same young woman that made me who I am today.” Many believe that she accomplished her goal.  Bastedo said, “Belle is a bookish character, disinterested in romance, more in learning. This is Emma Watson’s 21st century Hermione Granger.” There is no doubt that the animated movie affected the lives of many moviegoers, but the live-action film certainly has and will make a difference.
