Whether you hate it or can’t get enough of it, you’ve probably heard of Tik Tok. Tik Tok is an app where you can create and share short videos. With over 1 billion users, the platform has become one of the most popular forms of social media. But why?

Anyone can use Tik Tok. The platform makes it incredibly easy to create and watch content. To create a video, all you have to do is open the camera. From there, users choose a sound bite of a song, or follow a trend, or use their own sound. It’s not very difficult to find sounds or challenges, thanks to Tik Tok’s algorithm, the use of hashtags, and how simple it is to find a sound. When you open the app, the first thing you see is the “For You” page. This is a customized page to fit your own interactions on the app. This makes each user’s experience personalized. It’s technically a never-ending page designed by artificial intelligence. Over time, the AI learns what you like to watch and shows you more of that or things similar to that.

Perfecting a user’s feed is an aspect a lot of social media platforms have been trying to achieve. You might have noticed that Instagram and Twitter have modified their algorithm recently. Instagram began placing posts they decided were relevant to a user toward the top. Twitter does the same thing, and also shows you significant tweets you may have missed. Tik Tok uses solely AI to create an ideal experience for you, so you continue using the app.

Now, I know it sounds like I’m a spokesperson for Tik Tok, but it really is interesting to see just how quickly it became one of the most popular forms of social media. The app figured out exactly what users wanted, something others have been trying and failing at for years.
