When it comes to high school traditions, some are etched in stone, seemingly unchangeable. The annual powder puff football game–now referred to literally as flag football–at Orchard Park High School is one such tradition, one where Seniors usually claim victory. However, the Class of ’24 decided to flip the script, making history with back-to-back wins.
For Annie Henrich and her teammates, securing two consecutive victories was nothing short of incredible. This achievement wasn’t just about winning a game: it symbolized the unity and dedication of a class determined to change the norm. “It felt so awesome to win powder puff two years in a row. I think it made our class feel very unified. We all contributed and worked for the two wins,” said Henrich.
Their secret to success, according to Annie, was all about the energy. “What contributed to our success was energy on the sidelines, in the stands, and on the field. The coaches and players stayed positive even when the game got super close.”
There were moments that will forever be etched in their memories. “Memorable moments were definitely rushing the field both years after winning!” Henrich recalls. And let’s not forget the unique twist they added by starting the game with a safety against the Junior class, setting a tone of determination and innovation.
Their preparation for the annual showdown wasn’t a typical run-of-the-mill approach. “We focused more on passing plays than they have in previous years. This led to more touchdowns because it exploits more space,” noted Henrich.
But what made their victories even sweeter was the unwavering support and encouragement from their fellow students and the school community. “Powderpuff is always a big community event so feeling the energy and excitement leading up to the event definitely amped us up,” highlighted Henrich.
For future Junior teams hoping to secure back-to-back Homecoming Flag Football victories, Annie had some words of wisdom to share: “I would suggest to focus on defense just as much as offense! The defensive stops are just as important as touchdowns!” Henrich added, “I would also suggest to stay positive and have quick huddles. Spending too much time deciding on what play will waste valuable time!”
The Class of ’24 didn’t just win a game–they rewrote the script for Homecoming Flag Football at Orchard Park High School. Their back-to-back victories symbolize unity, determination, and the invaluable support of the school community. It’s more than a game: it’s a story of breaking traditions, embracing new strategies, and making history. The Class of ’24 has set a new standard for future Junior teams as this annual Homecoming Eve tradition continues to evolve.
