Over Veteran’s Day weekend, the OPHS Girls Field Hockey team went to Long Island for the State Championship Tournament. After initially beating Northport 5-1, they suffered a 4-0 loss to Mamaroneck on Sunday, rendering them 2nd in the State.
The Lady Quakers played Webster-Thomas in regionals, which is the step before States. The team won 3-2 to secure the berth to the State tournament.
“We followed our rule first and fast, and we were able to score first. Webster was able to score to tie it up. We won in overtime,” said Gia Fanutti, Junior goalie.
The team left Friday, November 10th to embark on their journey by bus to Long Island for the State tournament. They played Northport, who was ranked number 7 in the State, on Saturday November 11th. They beat them 5-1. Halle Senfield scored 4 out of the 5 goals to help the team win the game.
“Our offense was on fire. Every time we were able to put it in their circle, we were able to put it in the net. And our defense was unstoppable,” said Fanutti when asked about their underdog victory.
On Sunday the Quakers played Mamaroneck, and lost 4-0.
“Mamaroneck had a strong offense, and it was tough keeping the ball out of our circle. We had 32 corners against us [a corner is an automatic play against], but we only let them score 4 times,” said Fanutti.
