On November 16, Orchard Park High School’s chorus and musical director Mrs. Szczepanki held a general meeting to launch the school’s production of Anastasia. At the meeting, the students were given a packet with monologues and songs they should study for the auditions. Both males and females are given two monologues and three songs to choose from. Some songs include In My Dreams, Journey Into the Past, Close the Door, We’ll Go From There, Still, and more. Vocal and acting audiences were held Tuesday, November 28 and dancers on Wednesday, November 29.
Everyone was told they should “dress to impress” by dance chordinator Ms. Quinn. “Jeans and sneakers won’t cut it.” Students should show up in dress pants, button up shirts, or day dresses.
“Bring your A game,” says Musical Director, Maria. Szczepanki. Only 40-45 people will make the cut. During the general meeting, students sang the songs they would have to perform at auditions, while Mrs. Szczepanki accompanied on the piano. There is no doubt that the group has talent and is excited for the musical.
“I’m so excited to begin rehearsals and perform Anastasia. It’s hard work, but always a fun time and we’re super accomplished when it all comes together at the end,” says senior Claire Kubiak. Kubiak is a talented actress that has been a part of many plays and musicals during her time here at Orchard Park and she can’t wait for Anastasia to begin.
“I love being a part of musicals. The people, the songs, and the whole experience is always fun and unforgettable. I’ve made some of my closest friends here,” says Peter Szczpanki when asked what his favorite part of being in musicals is.
Inspired by the beloved films, the broadway musical, Anastasia, transports viewers from the twilight of the Roman Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s. After hitting her head while escaping, resulting in her forgetting the murder of her family and any memory of being a princess, Anastasia sets out to discover the mystery of her past. She enlists the aid of a conman and an ex-aristocrat, and together they embark on an adventure to help her find home, love, and family.,
Soon, the cast list will be made, dancers will be picked, rehearsals will begin, and with hard work, time and dedication from the students, a show everyone will enjoy will hit the stage. Anastasia, coming Spring 2024!
