Fortnite sored an all time high in player count of 5.8 million on November 4, 2023, due solely to the release of the new Fortnite season, but the release is not without controversy.
Recently the popular Battle Royale video game, Fortnite, decided to turn to an old page in a new way. The company, Epic Games, decided to return the game to its former glory by revisiting the old map. With this came the old weapons, as well as the old Point of Interests.
Because of this, many old players that have quit the game are returning for the one month long stint, which is supposed to run from November 3 – December 2, 2023.
Even with this many players, there is fear this isn’t going to last, as Epic games has a history of messing things like this up, specifically during the first time Fortnite ran its cycle. Right now Fortnite is in its recreation of Season X, which is when they first saw a drop in numbers of players. This has given many old players a feeling of déjà vu. The community is hoping the same thing doesn’t happen as people are claiming to have the most fun they ever have on the game, but the fear it’s inevitable.
“I’m having the most fun I’ve ever had in a video game. That’s for sure. I think that if Epic Games were smart, they would keep the game like this forever. It’s that simple for me. Keep the game like this and people will be happy. That’s not going to happen, though” said Orchard Park High School Student Hudson Giancaterino.
On the other hand a large percentage claim that some are blinded by nostalgia and need to move on.
“The game is evolving,” said Orchard Park High School student Ethan Ford. “People need to move on. Allow the game to run its course. I understand why players would want to have the game stay this way, but then the people would get bored which would ultimately lead to the game’s death. In my opinion they are just mad, they fell behind, got washed.”
The community is largely split. Some people want the game to move on, while others want the game to stay as it is, so they can relive their childhood. The truth is, only Epic Games knows what’s going to happen ,and the future of their game is in their hands. Hopefully they make the right choice.
