In a remarkable achievement, students from the Environmental Literature class at OPHS made a significant mark at the Erie County Envirothon. Despite being the underdogs, the team displayed exceptional dedication and skill, culminating in impressive results at the competition.
One of the teams, aptly named the EarthQuakers, secured second place in both oral presentation and forestry categories, and third place in aquatics. This is a historic achievement as it marks the first time an English class has placed in any category at the Envirothon.
The students, Sarah Albert, Abi Bernas, Carissa Dunlap, Kate Gerold, and Olivia Johnson, prepared diligently under the guidance of their teacher, Julie Bastedo. Despite limited preparation time, their hard work and teamwork paid off, earning them accolades in a field traditionally dominated by students with more specialized backgrounds in sustainable agriculture and environmental science.
Their success is a testament to the versatility and talent of our students and the supportive community that fosters their growth. When you see Sarah, Abi, Carissa, Kate, or Olivia, be sure to congratulate them on their outstanding performance and for representing our school with such distinction. Congratulations to the EarthQuakers and their inspiring journey at the Erie County Envirothon!
