Every year, the Varsity Cheerleading Team decorates the Baker foyer for Homecoming Week. This year is different. Cancer Awareness Club (CAC) has taken over the space.
“The cheerleaders have more competitions in the fall, so they’re busier than in the past,” says Pep Club Co-advisor, Mr. Graffeo.
Cheerleading’s busier fall schedule opened up the decorating opportunity for CAC. “We have a lot going on that week and we decided to give up decorating. My coaches want to focus more on the float and pep rally,” says Cheerleading Captain Lilly Croft.
CAC is excited to have this space because Homecoming Week is an important and fun time of year. Decorating the foyer will bring awareness to the club and the work it does in the community. “I think decorating the baker foyer for homecoming will bring a lot of new members to the club. This in turn will help spread awareness, raise money, and support the families in need,” CAC Co-president Lana Hollins said.
Because CAC landed on this opportunity suddenly, the club is in a rush to get the foyer decorated before Homecoming. The Homecoming theme this year is Enchanted Lights and Enchanted Nights, so most of the decorations for the foyer will be similar to the movie Tangled.
Although this is a new activity for the club, they have participated in and run many different fundraisers. One of the most known fundraisers that the club does is Adopting a Family at Christmastime through the P.U.N.T. Foundation. This is where the members raise money and buy Christmas gifts for a family that has been affected by cancer. The club also volunteers at the annual Courage of Carly holiday party and Kaely’s Kindness Mother-Daughter Luncheon.
Being officers for another year, co-presidents Lana Hollins and Lindsey Howard, Vice President Eva Gross, and Public Relations Officer Aqsa Butt continue to raise awareness about the effects of cancer as well as the club’s membership.
Entering a new school year, they encourage new freshmen, or any grade level of students, to join this group that helps the community and school.
“I think CAC is beneficial to our community because we bring together all grades at our school to work together. We educate others about all forms of cancer, but we specifically focus on improving the lives that it has affected,” said CAC Vice President Eva Gross.
