Ever think you would see chickens during class? Well, you might have heard about chickens roaming the courtyard, an unanticipated twist to the day on September 16.
After students reported unexpectedly seeing chickens wandering near and around the school premises and others expressed concerns regarding the chicken’s safety, Officer Mackey decided to take action.
Mackey gathered the two chickens, a hen and a rooster, from the senior parking lot on Baker Rd. and put them in the courtyard to safely preserve them. The news had traveled, and the animals had come to the attention of students and staff. It was unique to see during the middle of class and served for great amusement.
After being safely contained for some time, the owner was identified and contacted. She requested that the chickens be rehomed, as her property was not adequate for a rooster. By her request, the rooster was relocated to a farm with other chickens.
“Out of the many duties that fall upon school resource officers, I wanted to assist in aiding the removal of the chickens from the parking lot for, not only their safety but for the safety of the student drivers that attend OPHS,” said Officer Mackey when asked what motivated her to handle the unusual disturbance.
The chickens were restored to safety thanks to Officer Mackey and the considerate staff here at Orchard Park High School.
