As the Early Application Season is ending for most universities across the United States, and The State University of New York (SUNY) system is offering a free application week to all New York public school students from October 21 through November 3. All students can apply free of charge to five SUNY schools using the SUNY application or the Common Application (CommonApp).
“SUNY Free Week is a great opportunity for students to complete their application and save up to $250 on application fees,” said School Counselor Dr. Cervoni. She added, “Other individual colleges sometimes have free application periods.”
There are many misconceptions about early-action and early-decision application types. With most colleges’ early-action application programs ending in early November, there have been many questions in seniors’ minds. Dr. Cervoni offered clarification regarding SUNY Free Application Week and Early Action:
“Early action applications are just a nonbinding way to apply early and hear back early… Early decision on the other hand is a binding decision,” said Dr. Cervoni when asked about the difference between early action and early decision. Binding means that it’s a decision that can’t be changed or stopped.
She also added “Make sure you are selecting early action in the application, if you would like [early action]. You are not automatically registered for the early action application program just because you apply before the deadline.”
The guidelines set forth by the colleges and universities you plan on applying to are a vital part of the application process. “Make sure to do individual research on the colleges you plan to apply to. There are no general guidelines for applications set by all universities,” said Dr. Cervoni.
“Applying early may lead to benefits from the college, such as priority housing and scholarships and aid,” Cervoni said when asked about the benefits of applying early. College application costs can become a burden on students’ and families’ wallets.
“Getting applications done by Thanksgiving makes life so much easier with all the stuff off your plate” Cervoni added when asked her final thoughts on the college application process.
Students agree that SUNY Free Week is a great way for students to save money on their application.
“I think that it’s great that SUNY schools offer free application week, especially to the students who are applying to many instate colleges as well as out-of-state schools. It significantly reduces the burden of many application fees,” said Senior Madalyn Brown.
Seniors are in different situations regarding their college applications. “I’m very excited to see what the future holds for me as I have applied early to many colleges. I can’t wait to see their early decisions and find out which college is the right fit for me,” said Addison Roberts when asked about her experience applying to college.
“I am already committed to playing lacrosse at Canisius University, and I’m very excited to see what my future holds,” said Senior Ella Forcucci when asked about her college plans.
With the early-application season ending, The State University of New York system offers a great opportunity for high school seniors to save money and greatly benefit their future education.
