Sign up now for Orchard Park’s first-ever girls’ wrestling team. Winter sports registration opens on October 21 and closes November 14. Remember to have an updated physical and register soon.
Practices will be every day after school from 3-4:45 in the OPHS small gym with occasional practices at OPM. Transportation will be provided.
The girls’ wrestling team will have 4 dual matches and 8 weekend tournaments this year. “Tournaments are always super fun, and you meet so many cool people,” said Freshman Olivia Phillips.
No experience is necessary and you will be taught everything you need to know, bring a friend, and try something new. The girls’ team will be participating in Freestyle, while the boys’ team will continue Folkstyle; therefore, Freestyle wrestling will be new to all girls and taught to the whole team. “I’m excited to learn to wrestle this year and knowing that the other girls who have wrestled for a long time are also learning a whole new sport this year is really reassuring,” said freshman Cassia Long.
Wrestling is a great sport to learn to become disciplined, mentally tougher, and to become an overall better athlete. “I think it’s really cool that girls in a male-dominant sport can branch out and their talent can still shine through outside the men’s spotlight,” said junior Ally Schmidt.
