Pericles, credited with the establishment of democracy in Ancient Greece, once said, “Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn’t mean politics won’t take an interest in you.”
With the upcoming presidential election and the rise of false media, it is important to inquire and form our own political beliefs and act where we can. All Americans have rights and with them come responsibilities. I feel that among these responsibilities, participating in politics should be the highest. Conducting your own research–rather than blindly following others’ opinions–on parties and members; respecting the perspectives of those around you, despite perhaps disagreeing; and, finally, voting, are all imperative.
This even includes voting for a candidate in the mock election held by the History Club at Orchard Park High School.
Even if you do not affect policies or the outcome of the election by casting your vote, those policies and parties will affect you. They shape your life and liberties. Do not bury your head and ignore the world around you. It will not ignore you.
