Music is one of the most important parts of my life, and I know that many others feel the same. Music brings people together, can fill the silence in a room, and make people feel seen. I love music. I play it in the car, in the shower, when I’m cooking or cleaning, or doing anything.
But there is a big difference between music and art. I view music as just a song, I guess. That doesn’t mean that it’s good or anything; it’s just a song.
I view art, in the musical sense, as something that is genuinely groundbreaking and that is comparable to an angel singing in my ear. Recently I feel like genuinely good music is slowly disappearing, and new “TikTok” songs are surfacing. When I say TikTok music, I am not referring to clips of a song that blows up because of a new trend. I am talking about influencers coming out with the most random song that is heavily autotuned to disguise their real voice. For example, Jojo siwa. I mean no disrespect to Jojo at all, and if you like her or her song, that is great because that is your opinion; but I can’t listen to her music at all. Others agree. “It is the worst song I have ever heard,” said 10th-grader Trace B.
A little bit ago, her song “Karma” blew up on social media because of how bad it was. Trust me it is bad, and it is so sad because I feel like the majority of the songs being released recently are all songs like this. I feel so much worse when I go back and reminisce on pieces of perfection that were released years ago because I remember how amazing music used to be. For example, any Frank Ocean song ever. Ok, I know I sound like a crazy Frank Ocean fangirl right now, but I think the majority of people can agree whether you like his music or not that he is an amazing artist. Just looking at some of his lyrics or hearing him pour his heart out into a song is beautiful. And then when I listen to a newer song like” Karma,” I want to cry and never listen to music ever again. Not only does Frank Ocean have an amazing voice, but the stories he tells in his songs are so good. “Pyramids” by Frank Ocean is amazing. I love the
story that it tells,” said junior Abby Moore.
And it wasn’t just Frank Ocean releasing songs like this; even prime Kanye was releasing songs that had a great story, like “Runaway,” which told a story about his struggles with mental health and how it negatively affects a lot of things in his life, like his relationships. But songs now don’t tell a story at all. They just are bad.
Even influencer’s songs from 10 years ago were better. “The Fall of Jake Paul” by Logan Paul and “Still Softish” by Josh Richards and Bryce Hall were better than the songs today. I am not
going to lie–I know all the lyrics to both of these songs and if they were to be played, I would 100% sing along. But I would never sing to “Karma” or “Thick of It” by KSI.
Now if you like these songs, there is nothing wrong with that; this is just my opinion, and people are subject to their own. Anyway, I just want good music to be brought back. I do have hope though with Tyler, The Creator releasing” Chromakopia sometime this month, and I will be praying that Frank Ocean or A$AP Rocky is on it.
