The semester is ending, which means midterms are just around the corner. Senior Sam Qualy said, “With students worried about exams, I think it’s important they have a few ways to manage their stress.” So if you get overwhelmed or stressed out while studying for all of your exams, here are ten ways to destress:
1. Listen to your favorite music: Music has the power to influence your emotions and can be very soothing. It can distract you from stress and help you relax.
2. Try some deep breathing exercises: Deep breathing helps activate the body’s relaxation response, reducing anxiety and stress. It can also improve your focus and mental clarity.
3. Watch a funny movie or TV show: Laughter releases endorphins and reduces stress hormones, making you feel happier and more relaxed. It’s a great way to take your mind off your worries.
4. Do some light stretching or yoga: These activities help release tension in your muscles and improve blood flow. They also promote relaxation and mental clarity.
5. Hang out with friends or family: Socializing provides emotional support and can distract you from stress. Positive interactions with loved ones can boost your mood.
6. Try a new hobby or craft: Engaging in creative activities can be very therapeutic and fun. It can help you express yourself and take your mind off stress.
7. Meditate for a few minutes: Meditation helps calm the mind and reduce anxiety. It promotes a sense of inner peace and relaxation.
8. Play a game or do a puzzle: These activities are fun and engaging, giving your brain a break from studying. They can also improve cognitive function and problem-solving skills.
9. Spend time with a pet: Pets offer comfort and companionship, which can be very calming. Interacting with pets can also reduce stress hormones.
10. Get a good night’s sleep: Rest is crucial for your body and mind to recover and function well. A good night’s sleep can improve your mood, focus, and overall well-being.
Keep in mind that there are an abundance of ways to calm yourself down, these are just a few suggestions. “My favorite way to destress is by making a list of things I’m stressed out about and seeing what I can do about it,” said senior Julia Tills. “As a junior, I have a lot on my plate. With SATs, midterms, and just trying to stay afloat with my schoolwork. I think it’s important to take some time for myself. I usually do a face mask and watch a show,” said junior Peyton Brackenridge.
So, there you have it. Don’t forget to study and de-stress. Good luck!
