The Orchard Park Girls wrestling team had its first tournament of its first-ever official season on December 7. Orchard Park sent 8 girls leaving with 5 placing 3rd or higher and an overall 3rd place for the team scoring. Freshman Olivia Phillips and senior Sofia Saffin both placed first, while Senior Marissa Tara, Senior Ella Newell, and Eighth-grader Lily Sickora placed third.
“I think it was a great experience for our wrestlers to see how they matched up against the competition and for our new wrestlers to get experience on the mat. Overall we did really well, every wrestler,” said Olivia Phillips, a freshman.
Both the experienced and brand new to the sport, everyone, got to enter the world of freestyle during this tournament. The Orchard Park girls got to start their season, and they started very strong.
“My older sister and a few of my friends are on the Girls’ wrestling team, and I’m excited to go watch some of their tournaments this year. They have put in a lot of work on and off the mats for this season, and their hard work is already showing, ” said Freshman Charlotte Newell when asked for her thoughts on the first tournament for the Orchard Park Girls’ Wrestling team.
The season has just started for these girls, and they are making history one match at a time. With a long season ahead of them, they are working harder and harder every day to make their to the top.
