After losing badly last year to the Seniors in the annual Homecoming Junior vs Senior Powderpuff game, the current Seniors are back for revenge. With Powderpuff practices underway, there is hope that they can get the skills they need for a win against the athletic Junior class. There is worry, though, that the Seniors don’t have enough to come out on top. The big game will be on September 26th after the pep rally, kicking off this year’s Homecoming Weekend.
Bribing the refs is common in Powderpuff culture. Refs are brought different sweets and coffee in hopes of maybe getting away with more on the field than they normally would. They are treated like gods in the weeks leading up to the big game.
“Normally, the refs tend to rig the game to make the Seniors win, but, coming off a huge loss last year, we have to play super well if we want to win,” said senior Hayden Page.
Practices will continue through Homecoming week, planned and organized by Mr. Botticelli and will be anywhere, ranging from the turf to any available grass field. There are seven coaches for each team who will coach specific positions.
During practice, the players split up into groups and play specific positions to sharpen their skills, practicing speed, catching, and pulling flags. The coaches will then assign each girl to a position that fits her skill level.
Seniors should make sure to be at all practices because the more practices missed, the less playing time one receives. Seniors who don’t want to play but still want to be on the sidelines need to let their coach know. They will still have to pay the fee and go to as many practices as possible.
The stands will be filled with supporters dressed up for the team they support. The pep rally will include fall sports teams and is designed to excite all students for the big weekend.
The theme for this year’s powderpuff game is gold and silver. Seniors and Senior supporters will wear gold, while Juniors and junior fans will wear silver. Face coverings and face painting are not permitted, nor are players wearing any extra clothing, because it is easily grabbable.
“Yeah, I think we’re going to win this year, [we] juniors are all pretty athletic, and from the practices we’ve had so far, we work together well,” said junior Lila Bell with confidence.
The Snack Shack will be open during the game, led by the JV field hockey team. Backpacks, noise makers, and dogs will not be permitted in the stadium. See you then!
