After a slow start to the season, Boys Varsity Soccer hopes to bounce back during the next few challenging games. The Quakers started off the season hot with a 3-0 win against Hutch Tech, but then found themselves without a win for the next 4 games before defeating West Seneca 1-0.
The win against West Seneca was important for the team, as it marked their first league win of the new season. Getting back in the win column is huge for this team, especially in a league game. The Quakers dominated the game from start to finish, with their only goal coming from a Michael Barone header off a Baun free kick.
“The win against West Seneca was a big turning point for our team after coming off of a 4-game losing streak,” said senior Captain and 3-year starter Matt Roberts.
Three-year starter and senior Captain Brady Baun explained what these games meant for the team. “I’d say they’re going to be the games that test what we have as a team because obviously those next couple of games are going to be pretty difficult. No doubt, I think we have the talent and work ethic to come up on top, but in the end it comes down to who’s prepared and who shows up to play come game day,” said Baun.
The Quakers were able to keep their momentum, defeating Williamsville North 1-0 in overtime in league competition, but then lost to Clarence 7-1.
The team hopes to change the narrative that Orchard Park Soccer is a competitive program, but one that doesn’t always win big games.
In the past, the Quakers have had varied success, with their last sectional championship coming in 2014. Coming off a 3-2 loss to Williamsville North in last year’s second round of playoffs, the team strives to see more success this year.
“The expectation is to deliver. We practice for a reason, and that’s to get better every day, and come playoffs, we will be refined and ready to compete,” said senior Striker Reed Mabry, when asked about the expectations for upcoming playoffs.
