If you smelled something fishy in the Biology wing last week and were wondering where it came from, it was sharks! Students took part in a dissection of Dogfish Sharks for their Anatomy class in Miss Sparks’ room. They observed the structures of the shark, including their denticles–scale-like structures of the skin–and the “adorable” rows of tiny teeth within the mouth. One particularly interesting feature of the Dogfish Shark is its spiracles. Spiracles are small openings above the eyes that allow water into the gills even when the mouth is closed. This allows these sharks to swim around near the bottom of the water and take in oxygen without getting sandy mouths!
