The Yondr pouches do more than just lock up phones during the school day. Many people view them only as a disconnection from the outside world; however, they do significantly impact the safety of our school community.
Previous to the Yondr pouch system, it wasn’t uncommon for students to invade others’ privacy by taking inappropriate videos and or photos throughout the school day.
Mrs. Klube, a House 1 Social Worker who has seen the effects of inappropriate phone usage in school, said that although there are some struggles, the Distraction Free Schools legislation has made an overall improvement in the building. She feels the Yondr pouch system has developed a safer environment, as it reduces the negative consequences caused by phone usage, saying, “I think it was worth the investment.”
Klube expressed that “people take advantage” of technology use, and now there is less filming and fewer incidents of problematic pictures being taken.
Sophomore Xander Thompson agreed that “People shouldn’t have been doing it in the first place, but the precaution was taken. Now it’s finally becoming less of a problem.¨
Overall, the Yondr pouch system has proven effective in helping create a safer environment at OPHS, despite the feeling of disconnection that some students face.
