Here at OPHS, fashion is a way that students can express their personalities freely, and trends also influence fashion culture in our community. We have interviewed students to see what their thoughts are on aesthetics, trends, and everyday high school outfits.
Sophomore River Rowsell highlights the current fashion trends in our community and how comfort has affected our attire.
R.R: One trend I’ve seen in society that I don’t like are sweatshirts and sweatpants on a daily basis. I’m all for an occasional sweatshirt for comfort every now and then, but it’s becoming too normal. I’d love to see our generation explore some different styles that are a bit more professional for everyday life. Also, I’d love to see a revival of the 90’s trends in OPHS. Personally, I find that I focus much more in classes when I’m dressed up, and I feel others would have the same experience. I’ve always admired how people would get really dressed up for school, and I would be so excited to see it happen again!
Sophomore Kendall Rice also compares past fashion efforts to our current style.
K.R: A fashion trend that I’ve seen resurface recently that I love would be baggy low-rise pants. I love the trend of baggy low-rise because they were popular in the early 2000’s. If you look back in history, people would dress nicer, not just in sweatpants and sweatshirts like most days now. I would love to see a trend that breaks away from them, because I feel that sweatpants, sweatshirts, and leggings have been a trend for a while now, and it’s time for something new!
Furthermore, the “street wear” aesthetic style is a favorite among students. The bold style often consists of baggy clothes, graphic tees, layered tops, and many accessories. Originating in the 70’s, street wear style was a combination of New York hip-hop fashion, California skater fashion, and London punk. The original goal of street wear was to rebel against the modern luxury brands at the time that were simpler and much more subtle.
Two anonymous students shared their opinions on street style fashion:
“One trend that I’ve seen that I honestly love is baggy jeans. I like how you could style them with tight tops, and it just looks like really cute street wear!”
“I am absolutely loving the style of street wear! I love that people are now showing their style, and I believe it’s absolutely gorgeous!” said another.
Trends, culture, and community constantly shape fashion at OPHS and around the country. Most importantly, fashion expresses who you are and how you’re seen. Fashion is about more than what’s popular; it’s about how fashion influences you. So, what are your thoughts on the role of fashion in your life?
