From March 12th to March 15th, Orchard Park High School wowed audiences once again by performing the well-known musical Hadestown.
Hadestown is based on ancient Greek myth, where two characters, Orpheus and Eurydice, cross paths with Persephone and the Greek god, Hades. This story comes with a twist: it takes place in 20th-century America and has an atmosphere accurate for the time period.
“It’s based on New Orleans music during the Great Depression,” said Eva Sanchez, a Senior at OPHS who played one of the three fates in the musical.
Even beforehand, there was word of the fantastic work and interpretation that would almost replicate the work of the Broadway version. The School is well known for its music and arts programs, with a fantastic and well-maintained marching band, and outstanding participation in its choruses, orchestras, and band programs.
Every year, this gives Orchard Park the chance to bring its music and arts programs together as one and put on a show for a vast audience to enjoy and rave about into the future.
“I think the musical was very good and was surprised on how big the production was,” said Lucas Byskov, an exchange student new to the OPHS experience.
Reactions from the audience weren’t just given after the production ended, but throughout the whole musical. Many of the cast members recalled seeing and hearing the audience’s reactions.
“There were the Obvious crowd reactions, such as clapping, yelling, laughter, and cheering, but there were two I had not seen in any other show I’ve done at OPHS: gasping and crying,” said Cullen Merry, the senior who played Hermes, a Greek god and co-narrator of the story.
Like always, the Orchard Park High School Music Department put on a fantastic show that everyone all over the District enjoyed, and people can’t wait to see what they have to offer next year.
